Why Leave the Police? - By James Bayes

“Why would you leave the police? It’s a job for life, great pension, and a safe career.”
That’s what people ask me.
But let’s talk about that word: safe.
Is it really? We step into high-risk situations every day - physically, mentally, and emotionally - trying to make a difference in just a small corner of the world. And in return? We’re scrutinised constantly, by the public, the media, sometimes even our own colleagues and leadership, for doing the job that so few are willing, or even able, to do.
I love policing. I genuinely do. It’s shaped me, challenged me, taught me, and helped me grow in ways I never expected. But now, my perspective has changed.
I’ve got a young daughter, just turned 9 months old two days ago. And for the first time in a long time, I’m asking: What does “safe” really mean to me?
For me, it now means being present, being healthy, and having the chance to grow in new ways, as a father, partner, and person. I’m ready for new challenges. Ones that excite me, stretch me, and still allow me to make an impact, but also let me live.
You only get one life. I want to live it fully, with my family, and build a future where I’m thriving, not just surviving.
Here’s to new chapters, fresh challenges, and the courage to start again.
